Euphonix Brings the Max Air Digital Audio Console Tour Truck to the West

The specially-commissioned tour truck that Euphonix has been driving around the U.S.A. since last September, demonstating its MaxAir digital console and other digital broadcast equipment, is heading west for the next leg of its current 77-city circuit.

The Max Air Broadcast Tour is currently in Phoenix, Arizona, and it arrives in California on Feb. 10th to start an 8-week tour of the west coast. The western swing culminates in a stay at the NAB convention in Las Vegas in April. The tour then heads back east for another 40 cities, finishing in Florida in September of 2003.

The tour vehicle is outfitted with a 96-channel Euphonix MaxAir mixing system. MaxAir is the recently-introduced all-digital broadcast audio mixing console from Euphonix. In the tour truck, the MaxAir is set-up to simulate a local TV station digital audio control room, with playback of 48 channels of digital audio and 8 video streams, which includes program, preview and 6 camera/ob sources.

The truck also demonstrates supporting digital audio and video equipment from a list of sponsors that includes Accom, Miranda, Pioneer, 360 Systems, Clear-Com, DK-Audio America, Dolby Laboratories, Genelec, NVISION, TC Electronic, TerraSonde and Wohler Technologies.

In each city, the vehicle will be visiting up to 5 TV stations to allow operators, management and technicians to see the possibilities and powerful features that digital audio and video can bring to local TV operations. The truck will also be available at local Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) chapter meetings taking place at each location, for hands-on demos of the installed audio and video systems.

Atlantic Technology Taps Joshua Cooper as Creative Director

Oscar Ciornei, CEO of Atlantic Technology, has announced the appointment of Joshua Cooper as Creative Director. Mr. Cooper, who recently had the same title at Russound, will be responsible for industrial design, brand identity, and the creation of advertising and literature.

“While some may consider Creative Director an unusual title for someone in a loudspeaker company,” said Mr. Ciornei, “Joshua’s role will be to create speakers that look as good as they sound, and to create a unified design presentation for advertising, promotional literature and new electronics. I’ve worked with Joshua for over ten years, and he is an exceptionally creative individual with an instinctive sense of design. He brings to Atlantic extensive experience in the consumer electronics industry and in other fields ranging from record companies to telecommunications. Mr. Cooper is responsible for over 17 industrial design patents he and his team successfully developed.”

“I have a great deal of admiration for the outstanding designs Joshua has created for other companies,” said Peter Tribeman, Chairman. “I am delighted that we can now put these talents to work for Atlantic Technology.”

“Working with a creative person such as Oscar Ciornei has been a pleasure and a motivating experience,” said Mr. Cooper. “Our mutual creative thinking is much like that of a song writing team. The music and the lyrics must complement. I am once again looking forward to being a part of Oscar’s grand plan.”

From the start, Atlantic Technology has been one of the most highly regarded companies in the home theater industry. Specializing in complete high performance multi-channel speaker systems and home theater electronics components, all Atlantic Technology speaker systems are designed and engineered as integrated multi-channel ensembles, and hand assembled at the company’s Norwood, MA facility. These systems are tailored and tuned to provide a seamless and startlingly realistic soundstage for multi-channel music and home theater.

SRS Labs’ WOW Stereo Enhancement Technology Goes Mobile With New Kenwood Car CD Receivers

Three of Kenwood‘s 2003 car audio in-dash receivers, introduced last month at the CES 2003 show in Las Vegas, will provide SRS WOW audio enhancement technology as premier audio features.

WOW is offered on the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X969 ($700 US, available March 2003) and KDC-X869 competition-grade mobile CD receivers, and also on the lower-cost Kenwood-branded KDC-MP922 model. These products mark the first time that WOW audio processing has been incorporated into car audio products available worldwide.

WOW provides three primary benefits to mobile audio listeners including

  1. it elevates sound vertically, which is useful in vehicles where speakers are often located in kick panels and other low areas,
  2. it creates the perception of a three-dimensional sound field, including a pronounced center channel, using conventional two-channel stereo sources, and
  3. it uses bass harmonics to create the aural impression of very low frequencies, even from small speakers.

“Kenwood car products meet the need of mobile entertainment enthusiasts and it’s the inclusion of a superior audio technology, such as SRS WOW, that enables us to continue to make products practical and affordable that offer cutting edge technology,” comments Brian Towne, director of product management for Kenwood USA. “We are pleased to be the first products for the mobile market that include SRS WOW, and feel we are in an excellent position to increase our receiver market share for the fourth consecutive year.”

Thomas C.K. Yuen, chairman and CEO of SRS Labs said, “These new car audio receivers from Kenwood featuring WOW are a prime example of our strategy to expand our relationships with current OEM customers across different product lines. We intend to focus on similar opportunities to expand business with other OEMs using this ‘penetrate and expand’ business strategy.”

Joemeek JM828 8×2 Channel Mic Preamp is First Product Developed Under PMI

The JM828 mic preamp will be the first new Joemeek unit developed under the management of PMI Audio Group.

The JM828 is an 8 x 2-channel mic preamp designed around Burr Brown chips. It’s housed in a 1U rack case in distinctive Joemeek Green. The new unit is expected to ship in May 2003, with a suggested list price of $1,000 (US).

PMI Audio has been the North and South America distributor of Joemeek since the product line launched in the early 90s. The future of Joemeek was thrown into question with the recent demise of Fletcher Electro Acoustics, which manufactured Joemeek products. Now PMI has taken over the trademark, and says it has big plans for the well-known and very green line of signal processors.

PMI says the entire line of Joemeek products is being redesigned in England, by a team headed by former CLM Dynamics and Neve designer Allen Bradford. Their plan is to streamline the product series, improve build quality, and enhance the processors’ feature sets, while retaining the warm Joemeek sound. PMI says a new all-aluminum front panel, anodized in the traditional Joemeek Green, will make all of the new products look better as well.

Each of the eight channels of the new JM828 will offer:

  • 48V phantom power
  • Phase Reverse
  • Mic/Line Switch
  • Peak and Signal Present indicators
  • Gain control
  • Level & Pan
  • Solo
  • Impedance Control (50/200 Ohm)

The JM828 has individual outputs on each channel via balanced 1/4″ jacks. Both line level inputs on 1/4″ balanced jacks, and XLR balanced mic inputs are on the rear panel. When nothing is plugged into the line input, the mic/line switch defaults to a 20dB pad switch.

The output section has a stereo L/R output control and a headphone jack with control. In addition, there are L/R LED meters and a Solo LED for monitoring. The master section output has L/R out on 1/4″ balanced jacks, and inserts for the L/R buss. There is a summed mono 1/4″ output jack for external feeds.

Several JM828s can be cascaded together via an expansion in/out, making it possible to configure up to 32 inputs that all buss to the L/R.

The release of the full line of re-designed Joemeek units is scheduled for summer of 2003, with the half rack units expected to appear in the spring.

Atlantic’s Series 8200 Loudspeaker System Provides Ultimate Performance and Customization for Installers and Consumers

At CES 2003 in Las Vegas, Atlantic Technology demonstrated its new THX Ultra2-certified loudspeaker series, the System 8200. The company also announced that it will begin delivering the 8200 line to dealers in January 2003. System prices will range from $7,000 to $18,500 (US), depending on configuration and finishing options.

The System 8200 is a THX Ultra2-certified system that takes multi-channel audio to the highest levels of performance, and provides perhaps the most flexible acoustic and aesthetic loudspeaker customization options ever offered.

System 8200 components include the 8200 LR three-way front speaker, 8200 C three-way center channel, 8200 SR dipole/bipole surrounds, and either a traditional 8200 box-style powered subwoofer or the unique 8200 Pedestal Subwoofers

When fully configured, System 8200 carries the prestigious THX Ultra2 certification, designating the ultimate in home theater performance. A wide array of available sonic adjustments impart a level of acoustic control and performance previously unavailable in consumer speakers, allowing each speaker to be uniquely adjusted according to its placement in the listening environment.

The System 8200’s modular speaker components are delivered in duraBlac™, Atlantic’s matte black “speckled” lacquer finish, for installation inside cabinets, or behind screens or curtains. These same black enclosures can be fitted with optional stunning high-gloss black lacquer or wood veneer accent panels that change them into works of art to match any décor.

System 8200 components include the 8200 LR three-way front speaker, 8200 C three-way center channel, 8200 SR dipole/bipole surround speakers, and either a traditional 8200 box-style powered subwoofer or the unique 8200 Pedestal Subwoofers. These PedWoofers™ can be combined with 8200 LRs to form attractive tower speakers. A dedicated outboard 350-Watt-per-channel servo controlled amplifier with dual parametric equalizers for exceptional bass control and optimization completes the PedWoofer option.

“Our System 8200 demonstrates that it is possible to approach the outer limits of the state of the art in multi-channel sound without having to pay the price equivalent of a new luxury car,” says Atlantic Technology president, Peter Tribeman.

“We have seen some very high-end custom home theaters with $100,000 speaker systems that, practically speaking, would be hard pressed to substantially exceed the performance of our new system at one tenth the cost,” continues Mr. Tribeman. “We have devoted a great deal of effort and cost to build in sophisticated controls that let the installer or consumer fine tune the speakers to the room and the source material. It’s certainly not an overstatement to say that this system will outperform most competing speaker systems simply because it works with the room and source material as opposed to against them!”

System 8200 is the first implementation of the company’s C.O.R.E. (Custom Optimized Room Enhanced) design philosophy.

Custom Optimized

System 8200 is optimized for sophisticated high-end home theater systems by giving the consumer or custom installer the option of concealing the duraBlac speakers in cabinets or behind screens, or dressing them up to display them in plain sight, and only paying for the level of finish required by the installation.

The optional accent panel kits (available only for the L/C/Rs, PedWoofers, and empty pedestals) are available in high gloss black lacquer, Natural Maple, Oiled Cherry, Natural Mahogany, duraBlac™, and unfinished MDF that can be customized by the installer/consumer to match any décor. The kits include tempered smoked glass tops for the LRs, while the PedWoofer kits offer the glass tops as an option. Should the consumer choose not to use PedWoofers, empty pedestals are available to take the place of the PedWoofers in building up the floor standing LRs.

Room Enhanced

One of the least addressed aspects of home sound systems is the room itself. System 8200 makes use of a wide array of sonic adjustments to optimize the system to the room, the source material and the listener’s acoustic taste.

The SA 8200 Servo controlled PedWoofer amplifier includes parametric EQ, a four-position phase adjustment along with remote controlled preset source EQs and level trim that impart a degree of bass control fine tuning previously unavailable. Although there are several powered bass loudspeakers on the market today, few if any offer the kind of sonic customization and optimization provided by this system.

The three-way 8200 LR front left/right and 8200 C center channel speakers feature a trio of acoustic controls to compensate for different room environments. First, by adjusting the tweeter’s output slope according to acoustically ‘live’, average, or ‘dead’ rooms. Second, by adjusting mid and high frequency output for placement of speakers behind perforated screens or curtains. And third, by adjusting the lower midrange for Boundary Compensation to reduce the sonic impact of placing speakers in cabinets or directly adjacent to a TV screen.

The 8200 SR surrounds are dipole/bipole switchable and meet the stringent THX Ultra2 specifications for all surround channels. The speakers are available in either duraBlac or matte white finish, and can be wall-mounted or used in conjunction with optional surround pedestals.
